Chippendale furniture
Chippendale is a furniture style named after the English master carpenter Thomas Chippendale. Thomas Chippendale was born into a family of carpenters in Otley, Yorkshire. At the age of 36 he moved to London, where he worked not only as a carpenter but also as an interior decorator, textile salesman and occasionally as an organizer of large-scale funerals.
His self-image as an organizer of larger trades on behalf of his customers led to him already organizing his furniture factory based on the division of labor. Chippendale was also one of the first to offer series-produced collections, which he sold using a catalog.

Style features of Chippendale furniture
In terms of style, Chippendale followed the Rococo intention of incorporating as much formal language as possible. In terms of practical construction, Chippendale already proved to be a classicist with a functional orientation.
Chippendale style features
His are particularly influential Seating furniture made from high-quality wood (preferably mahogany). Typical of Chippendale chairs are the curved legs with paws, which are supposed to be reminiscent of animal legs, as well as the breakthrough work and decorations on the chair and backrests.
In Victorian England from the mid-19th century onwards, many manufacturers offered collections in the “Chippendale style”, although the ornamentation and workmanship increasingly differed from the original Chippendale design. What all Chippendale furniture has in common is the rich ornamentation.
Chippendale Furniture Today
From today's perspective, the target group at the time was primarily the upper middle class and the rural nobility with a penchant for representative furnishings. This English zeitgeist was contrary to the Biedermeier style that was widespread in Germany.
Original Chippendale furniture is very rare. To make matters worse, Chippendale did not use any maker's stamps on his furniture. Nowadays, Chippendales are occasionally auctioned off at Christies or Sotheby's for collector's prices.
The style is currently experiencing a revival through the country house style, similar to Biedermeier.
