Lagom – Bring Swedish balance into your home
What is Lagom?
Lagom comes from Sweden and literally means something like “just right”. This just right applies to all areas of life and is intended to stand for finding the right balance in all things. Even if Lagom is often described as the newly announced, current lifestyle trend from Scandinavia: Lagom is much more than just a trend. Lagom means finding the right balance - the Swedish formula for happiness lies in this pursuit.
If you look at the origin of the word, you end up with the Vikings. Their time has been over for over 1000 years, but their sense of community lays the foundation for the Lagom philosophy of life. Lagom is made up of the two words laget and om. In a figurative sense, these mean “once for the whole team”. The Vikings usually ate and drank together, sitting around a campfire. The horn filled with mead was passed around in turn, and everyone drank just enough so that there was enough for everyone and everyone got the same sip.
Over the centuries laget om has been shortened to lagom, but its meaning has continued to be used continuously. In the novel Michel from Lönneberga by Astrid Lindgren, the versatility of the word becomes clear: the father asks Michel's mother how she makes the Köttbullar. The mother answers: “Lagom stora, lagom Runda och lagom bruna” (Lagom big, Lagom round and Lagom brown). So just right.
Lagom is by no means a lifestyle trend, but rather a character trait and a philosophy of life of the friendly neighbors from the north.
Lagom as an interior design style
Basically, lagom applies to all areas of life. But especially in your own home, it is important to create a feel-good atmosphere that absorbs the stress of everyday life and invites you to feel good. Setting up in Lagom isn't expensive or stressful: the result is a place that's just perfect for you. Because that's the idea behind Lagom - suitable for you!
What is the principle of the Lagom living trend?
There are a few interior trends - but Lagom is more: it is a philosophy of life that is also transferred to the interior design style.
With the Lagom living trend it is also important to find the right balance. The focus here is on quality rather than quantity. The idea of sustainability plays a major role. That's why when furnishing according to the Lagom living idea, you rely on natural materials that nature can reproduce. Furniture should therefore be made of solid wood. It is important to ensure that this is the case local woods
Recycling materials is also very important to Lagom furnishing ideas. With upcycling, used or worn-out things are developed into new ones and continue to live. In addition, e.g. B. Furniture made of solid wood, especially those that are not painted, can be reprocessed at any time.
Which materials are suitable for furnishing according to Lagom?
Natural materials – such as B. wood, rattan, linen, wool or stone - form the basis for the Lagom furnishing style. Their texture and feel make your home come alive and at the same time exude calm. An essential part of the Swedish way of life is respect for nature and its resources. Therefore, no energy resources or materials should be wasted. Quality instead of quantity is the right credo here, which is implemented through fairly produced and sustainable products. Purchases should last as long as possible. Choose your furniture carefully: In addition to sustainability, functionality plays a big role - at least as big as the design. For example, a dining table with drawers can also be used as a desk. A stool can also be used as a side table. This is not only practical - at the same time the rooms are not overloaded with too many pieces.
Upcycling is a big topic at Lagom: even worn-out things can be restored or repurposed, or objects can be given a new use. An example of upcycling that everyone probably knows is furniture made from Euro pallets. But old wood and antique wood are also a great material for exclusive design pieces.
Which colors are suitable for Lagom?
The Lagom color scheme is practically self-evident: the focus is on the colors that can be found in nature and can be achieved with the materials used. In practice, this means combining colors that also occur together in nature.
Calm tones that are color coordinated give the room relaxed harmony. This is brought to the point by plants, but also by individual flowers. Lush bouquets and containers are not popular at Lagom.
When it comes to patterns, it shouldn't be too wild either: clear lines or graphic patterns underline the material's inherent feel and give it its structure.
The right size for lagom decoration
The same applies to the pieces of furniture as well as to plants and accessories: everything should have space and space to work for itself and not be lost in the crowd. There should be neither too much nor too little of anything – neither overloaded nor too minimalistic.
Beauty and functionality go hand in hand in the Lagom interior design style. That's why textiles such as B Pillows, blankets or furs should only be placed where they will actually be used.
The same principle applies to the decoration and arrangement of accessories: they only make sense wherever you look. And above all, the same applies here: choose every single eye-catcher carefully and avoid clutter!
