Properly care for wooden garden furniture

We have put together a few tips for you on how to properly care for your garden furniture and get it ready for the upcoming season. With the right care, you will be able to enjoy solid wood garden furniture for many years to come.

Before you use your garden furniture again in spring, first remove the dust that has settled on the surfaces of the garden furniture in the winter. The best way to do this is with a damp cloth. If your furniture has formed a gray layer due to the effects of the weather, you can remove this using appropriate means, e.g. B. with Veilfree by Hermann Sachse. Apply thinly with a cloth to the dry and clean wooden surface without leaving any haze. After about 15 minutes of exposure, treat the surface with a scrubbing brush or abrasive fleece. The gray haze is then removed.

If you have oiled outdoor furniture, you can treat it with oil after cleaning.

This is how you can prepare your garden furniture

Over time, a patina develops on wooden outdoor furniture. In oak wood this is light and greyish. In contrast to tropical woods such as teak, oak develops relatively slowly. Very often it is precisely this effect that is desired, as the patina underlines the unique character of the oak wood.

If you don't want your garden furniture to turn too gray over time, you can sand off the patina at any time without much effort.

For this you need sandpaper in different grit sizes (80, 120 and 180). You first sand the surface with the coarsest sandpaper (80 grit) and then with the medium one (120 grit). Please always sand in the direction of the wood grain. Finally, sand the surface again with the 180-grit sandpaper.

Naturally care for garden furniture with oil

Our garden furniture is generally not treated with oil, but is completely natural. Additional wood protection is actually not necessary, and oiled wooden surfaces tend to stain when wet. Oak wood is also extremely robust, meaning it can withstand weather-related influences very well. Neither the patina nor the cracks affect the statics and stability of your furniture. Outdoors Oak furniture So they require very little maintenance.

Of course, you can also care for your oak garden furniture with oil. This slows down the formation of the patina and the wood remains supple.

Before oiling, sand your wooden furniture if necessary. After you have freed the furniture from dust and dirt, you can use a soft cloth to apply a care oil to protect the wood.

A linseed oil-based wood oil is particularly suitable for garden furniture made of oak, which preserves the color and Grain of the wood.

After summer: How to properly clean your garden furniture

To ensure that your garden furniture looks beautiful again after the winter, you should first remove any dirt. Cleaning wooden garden furniture made of oak is very easy: the coarser dirt can be easily removed with a root or vegetable brush. You can then clean the garden furniture again with a mild soapy solution.

If you would like to treat the furniture with an oil afterwards, please make sure that the wood is completely dry beforehand. Otherwise stains may occur.

Garden furniture in winter

If possible, you should not leave garden furniture outside in winter. Snow, cold and the temperature fluctuations that are typical for us can put a lot of strain on the wood. This can lead to cracks forming. Cracks in the wood do not affect the stability of the wood, but are usually undesirable.

It is best to store wooden garden furniture dry and protected over the winter. The attic, garage or basement are suitable for this. In any case, the storage location should not be damp.

Please also avoid placing wooden garden furniture directly in front of a switched on heater. The warm air from the heating causes the wood to dry out faster than average, which can cause it to warp.
